It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Professor Janus Kuilkowski. Professor Kulikowski was an internationally renowned vision scientist who spent much of his career working in Manchester. He helped to put Manchester Vision Sciences on the world stage. He is most famous for using mathematical modelling, electrophysiology, and psychophysics to understand how the retina packages information for analysis by different regions of the visual brain. He was particularly fascinated by how humans have exquisitely rich colour vision and simultaneously high levels of visual acuity, an issue that remains of continuing interest to the vision community today.
Janus was universally respected throughout the vision/neuroscience community. Always generous with his time he made a lasting impression on everyone he met, sometimes without realising it. He published more than 250 papers, 17 of which have over 100 citations and in total have accumulated over 7000 citations.
Until recently he was in good physical and mental health although not very mobile. He passed away after a short illness. He was not anxious or in any discomfort. Janus had a wonderful life and a comfortable death.
We will publish an obituary in due course
